Frequently Asked Questions
How long can I stay in the tanning bed the first time?
This depends on your skin tone and type. We will ask you to fill
out a skin analysis on your first visit to help determine your skin
type. We will also take into consideration how long it has been since
you last tanned.
How long will it take me to get tan?
This actually depends on several factors, but typically it will
take 3-5 sessions to get a base tan.
Do I need to wear eye protection while tanning?
Absolutely! Your eyelids are NOT thick enough to provide protection
from ultraviolet light, and their use is required by law. Damage can
manifest itself as reduced color vision or night blindness. "Raccoon
eyes" can be avoided by moving the eyewear to slightly different
positions during your tanning session. We do offer a few eye
protection solutions for you to choose from for a minimal cost.
If I'm really in a hurry may I tan more than once per
day?
To get an "instant" tan please consider using the Mystic Tan
sunless spray booth, or the California Tan custom bronzer air brush.
The color is very natural looking and it only takes a few seconds. If
you prefer traditional tanning please remember that tanning is a
process that can take up to 24 hours for the effects to develop. For
this reason, the Federal Government prohibits tanning more frequently
than once per 24 hours. There are no such limitations associated with
spray booth tans AND spray booth tanning is allowed on the same day as
a traditional tanning session.
Why should you use tanning accelerators / intensifiers products to achieve a dark, healthy tan?
The secret behind the success of indoor lotions is maximum UV
absorption, which causes increased melanin production. Melanin is the
pigment in the skin that darkens when exposed to UV rays. Because
moisturized, healthy skin tans more quickly, our products formulas are
fortified with essential nutrients and moisturizers to accelerate the
tanning process. In addition, these same essential vitamins, nutrients
and antioxidants protect the skin from free radicals and supply it
with the valuable nourishment it needs to stay healthy and young
looking. By using lotions you can tan faster in less sessions with less UV exposure = smarter tanning!
Ultimately, lotions help you get more value from each tanning session.
Please remember that "indoor" tanning lotions do not contain
sunscreens. I've heard so much about free radicals and antioxidants. How do
these products protect my skin from free radicals and other aging
ills?
The cells in your body use oxygen to generate energy, but in the
process toxic substances called free radicals are created. Free
radicals roam the body damaging vital cell structures. It is this
damage that's believed to cause many of the aging ills, for example,
wrinkles, lines, etc. An antioxidant is any vitamin that reacts in an
opposite manner to oxygen. These products contain all the necessary
vitamins and antioxidants necessary to neutralize free radicals.
Which lotion is the right one for me?
We'll help you determine your skin type and then recommend the best
tanning products. We carry many different formulas to choose from,
there's a product and price level that's just right for you.
Can I tan if I'm pregnant?
The concern about tanning and pregnancy is that tanning tends to
increase body temperature which may be harmful to the unborn baby. For
this reason we recommend against tanning while you are pregnant.
Can certain medications cause skin sensitivity to light?
Yes. Many common medications and even ingredients in food, shampoos
& soaps can cause skin sensitivity to photo (light) rays which may
lead to overexposure. If you are taking prescription medications
please check with your physician regarding possible photo
sensitivity.
Why Tan Indoors?
1. Controlling UV Exposure When tanning indoors you
know what to expect. Today's tanning equipment is designed to give you
measured amounts of UVA and UVB. When used properly you can develop a
tan without burning. When tanning outdoors, UV levels fluctuate
depending on many variables including; location, time of day, season,
closeness to the equator and weather conditions. Outdoor tanning =
uncertain UV Exposure.
2. Forecast Sunny Have you noticed that on your day off
it tends to be Cloudy, Cool or Rainy? You won't have that problem at
The Beach House Tanning Salon.
3. Speed Face it; we don't have all day to bake in the
sun! Indoor tanning sessions are usually 15 minutes or less.
4. Helpful Advice The staff at The Beach House Tanning Salon will advise you on how
to build and maintain your tan reducing your risk of breaking RULE #1
(Don't ever Sunburn).
5. Professional Results The Beach House Tanning Salon can help you
choose the right lotion for your skin. A good tan accelerator will
moisturize your skin and improve tanning results. Allowing you to
achieve a better tan in less time! Other helpful advice: When tanning
indoors or out moisture is lost from the skin. Use a good daily
moisturizer after tanning, showers or exercise to keep a health
glowing skin tone. Choose a good quality lotion when tanning. Exposure
to UVA can cause premature skin aging and wrinkling. A high quality
tanning lotion can help prevent and reduce these effects. It's well
worth the money! Remember, like most fun things in life, moderation is
the key. Talk with your salon owner about tanning, take care of your
skin, and take a break every now and then.
